Walter Raleigh
1552-1618
An English landed gentleman, writer, poet, soldier, politician, courtier, spy and explorer instrumental in the English colonisation of North America. He rose rapidly in Queen Elizabeth I's favour and was knighted in 1585 but was later imprisoned in the Tower of London by Elizabeth and again some years later by her successor James I. In 1618 Raleigh was arrested and executed.
