Mary Rose - Purser
c.1510-1545
Died in 1545 when the Royal Navy flagship Mary Rose sank at the Battle of the Solent. The purser's role was to control food and drink onboard. He was a robust, strong and muscular man but the top of his leg bones and his hip joints were flat and so must have walked with a rolling gait and would not have been able to straighten his back and would therefore not have been a physically active crew member.
