James Gillray
1756-1815
English caricaturist and satirist whose targets included George III, the Prince Regent, Napoleon, William Pitt, Charles James Fox and Edmund Burke amongst others. He has been called "the father of the political cartoon" (with Hogarth as the grandfather) and an indication of his popularity and influence is Napolean's comment in exile on Elba - "Gillray's depictions of me did more damage than a dozen generals."
"...'The great Globe itself and all which it inherit', is too small to satisfy such insatiable appetites....."
